Safari Ammunition
This column is dedicated to the large caliber cartridges commonly used on
safaris, and other heavy and dangerous game hunts, and is intended for actual
game hunting. Calibers under .375
are not listed here. Neither are
some of the large bore obsolete and unpopular calibers due to the lack of
properly headstamped brass cases. If
you don’t see your cartridge listed here, look elsewhere in this site in
either the custom or obsolete ammo columns, or contact us.
If you intend to hunt non-dangerous big game with your safari grade rifle
or just want to shoot it at paper, contact us for bullet selections more
suitable for lighter game or practice use.
Our
safari ammo is custom order only and uses only the toughest bullets available,
and is not loaded down or above original ballistics.
A-Square, Barnes, Swift, and Woodleigh supply our preferred bullets.
We can also use Speer African and Trophy Bonded series bullets.
See our section on ammo education to learn more about our preferred
bullets, and others.
All of our Safari Ammo is made with the correct caliber headstamped brass to
eliminate any customs nightmares upon entering the country your hunt will be
taking place in. Africa-bound
hunters should avoid cartridges having headstamps that don’t match the
markings on their rifles. More than
a few hunts have been ruined or delayed because a rifle was marked for one
caliber and the ammunition bore the headstamp of another because its cartridge
case was formed from a more common and possibly less expensive casing and failed
a customs inspection, even though the cartridge was holding a bullet of the
correct caliber for the rifle.
Every single Safari cartridge Stars & Stripes Ammunition produces is
individually hand assembled and inspected to ensure that each and every round
will chamber. This ammo has bullets
fully crimped in place to eliminate them being driven back into the case under
recoil in magazine rifles, or the second bullet jumping out of the case upon
firing the first one in a double, which would result in a jammed gun. Pressure curves are also carefully maintained to avoid sticky
extraction, or fired cases hopelessly stuck in a chamber.
All Safari Ammo has water proofed primers and bullet/case mouth joints.
Finally, our ammo is packed in a rigid airline friendly container that
protects both the bullet point from any kind of deformation or being pushed back
into the case, and the primers from impacts and possible accidental detonation.
We recommend only those bullets designed with a specific cartridge in mind to
maintain the correct cartridge overall length, as this helps to eliminate some
feeding problems in magazine rifles and will ensure that the bullet isn’t
extending too far out of the case for those used in double and or proprietary
rifles, as this could result in an impossible situation where the gun either
couldn’t be put into battery or dangerous pressures could be encountered upon
firing. The correct cartridge
specific bullet is also one essential factor for proper regulation of double
rifles.
